Code of Conduct

Our Latin dance school Salsa Therapy is dedicated to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all of our students. We prioritize providing a space where every person can enjoy the many benefits of dance without fear of discrimination, harassment, or any other form of inappropriate behavior.
We are proud to have a variety of students from NZ and abroad which means we have to understand and respect the cultural differences and beliefs. Our goal is to foster an inclusive and welcoming community for everyone, and we believe in upholding the principle of freedom of speech by respecting each individual's right to choose their own words. We ask that all students and staff members respect each other's language choices and refrain from using language that could be seen as discriminatory or derogatory.
By working together, we can create a supportive and secure community where everyone feels valued and respected. To ensure this, we have developed a code of conduct that outlines our expectations for all members of our dance community:

1. RESPECT FOR OTHERS

Every member of our dance community or persons entering our venue should be treated with respect, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, or any other personal characteristic. Any form of discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated.

2. NO HARRASMENT

Any behaviour that is unwelcome, offensive, threatening or intimidating will be considered harassment, and will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, unwanted physical contact, inappropriate comments or advances, and any form of bullying. Respect your partner's space and always ask for consent entering their space.
Dancing is a contact sport however Sexual harassment is not tolerated. We expect everyone to behave in a friendly and appropriate manner, and not to make others feel uncomfortable. Keep your hands and body movement to what is appropriate and required for the dance.
If you notice a person dancing closely with another, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s okay for you to do it as well.

3. NO VIOLENCE

We do not tolerate any form of violence or aggression, including physical violence, verbal abuse, or any other form of aggressive behaviour. Any disputes should be resolved peacefully and with respect for all parties involved. If you need to address someone's behaviour, please contact the dance teachers or the director of the school and explain the case.

4. DRESS CODE AND PERSONAL HYGIENE

All members of our dance community are expected to dress appropriately for the environment. This means that clothes should be clean, shoes should be appropriate and comfortable for dancing (No jandals). As a respect for others and yourself, please use deodorant, and wear clean clothes when you are coming to any of our classes or events. Any clothing with inappropriate language or graphics will not be allowed, this is at the discretion of Salsa Therapy.

5. NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL

The use of drugs or alcohol during classes is explicitly forbidden. However, some dance events that allow the consumption of alcohol may permit its use. If in the event we identify an individual's behaviour unacceptable or unsafe, that person may be asked to leave.

6. IT’S OK TO SAY NO

Anybody can say no to any dance at any time for any reason - or no reason at all. It’s also OK to stop and leave a dance at any time. If someone declines to dance with you it can be because of various reasons: e.g. they are tired, they are in pain, they need rest, or simply they don’t want to dance with you. Don’t take it personally, move on. Should you wish to decline a dance, do so politely.

7. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

We expect all students to follow the instructions of their instructors and event organizers. This includes following safety rules, respecting the space and equipment, and being mindful of others.
